Top 10 Best Players in La Liga

The final edition of our top 10 players in league football has us taking a deeper dive into La Liga. This is our official Top 10 Players in La Liga list for the 2020-2021 season. All player stats found here https://www.transfermarkt.us/

10. Mikel Oyarzabal

Mikel Oyarzabal has been one of the hottest prospects in La Liga for some time now. At the age of 23 he has started to put together the resume to be considered a top player. Oyarzabal is Real Sociedad’s main attacking threat. He has proven his worth with 7 goals and 2 assists through 11 games this season. Real Sociedad will need Mikel to continue improving if they are to reach their goal of qualifying for the Champions League.

9. Kieran Trippier

One of the most important players in Atletico Madrid’s defense is Kieran Trippier. He had a bit of a rough ending to his career with Tottenham. But Trippier has found new life in La Liga. He continues to impress as Atletico Madrid hope to win La Liga this season. One of the better attacking fullbacks in La Liga, Trippier has been able to notch 4 assists so far this season.

8. Jose Maria Gimenez

Jose Maria Gimenez is one of the most important players in La Liga. He is rightfully considered one of the finest center backs in the world. Gimenez unfortunately has missed some time due to injury this season. For Atletico Madrid to continue their success they need him to continue to play in good form and get healthy again. He will be a major boost to the side when he returns.

7. Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema has somehow been Real Madrid’s main striker since 2009 and is still underrated. He had obviously been a bit of an afterthought with Cristiano Ronaldo on the team. But since Ronaldo left, Benzema has just continued scoring goals like he always does. Benzema has 8 goals and 5 assists so far this season.

6. Luis Suarez

Barcelona somehow decided that Luis Suarez was expendable after last season. It makes sense for them to try and get younger at the position but Suarez continues to be a talisman in front of goal. It seems as if he has officially pushed Diego Costa out of the team. It’s not difficult to see why either; as Suarez has 8 goals in his first 11 appearances for Atletico.

5. Jan Oblak

Jan Oblak is one of only a few goalkeepers who can truly be described as world class. He continues to prove this each and every season. Atletico Madrid has done a fantastic job in keeping the ball out of their own net. Oblak currently has 10 clean sheets out of a possible 14 in La Liga this season.

4. Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos is one of the finest midfielders in the world. This season he has been a little bit below his usual impressive standard. He currently only has 1 goal and 1 assist in his first 15 appearances. Expect those numbers to improve as the season progresses. But if they don’t then it’s possible that Kroos could tumble down the list a bit.

3. Iago Aspas

Iago Aspas has had a remarkable emergence since his days at Liverpool. It seems like is not even close to slowing down at the age of 33. He is RC Celta de Vigo’s best player and he earns this spot in the top 10. Aspas has been extremely valuable up to this point in the season. He already has 9 goals and 6 assists through his first 17 La Liga appearances this season.

2. Raphael Varane

Varane is another one of the best central defenders in the world. He is fully deserving of the number 2 spot on this list as any team in the world would love to have him. If Real Madrid are going to have a shot at winning the league title they will need Varane every step of the way.

1. Lionel Messi

Not much really needs to be said about Lionel Messi’s inclusion at number 1. He is probably the greatest footballer of the last 15 years. With Cristiano Ronaldo off to Serie A there is no other name that would fit at the top of this list.

The Most Expensive Transfers – Summer 2020

One of the most exciting things about soccer is undoubtedly the transfer windows. Bringing in new talent is always fun. Today we’ll analyze some of the most expensive transfers from the Summer Transfer Window. All transfer information comes from Transfermarkt: https://www.transfermarkt.us/statistik/saisontransfers

5. Miralem Pjanic – $66 million

Miralem Pjanic moved from Juventus to Barcelona for a fee of approximately $66 million. When this move was first announced I admit I was very confused. Pjanic is a quality player but at the age of 30 it’s most likely that he will not be making another big money move in the future. For that reason, it seems like Barcelona may have overpaid for his services. This is even more likely when taking into account that he isn’t even a guaranteed starter. With Arthur moving in the opposite direction for only a few million more, this move was questionable at best for Barcelona.

4. Ruben Dias – $74.8 million

Ruben Dias slots in at number four on our list of most expensive transfers. The latest in a long line of expensive defenders for Manchester City, Dias cost $74.8 million. So far, the move seems to be worth it. Ruben Dias has been a steady force for City since he joined the team. His partnership with both Aymeric Laporte and John Stones could be positive for a City team that has struggled mightily in defense. Only time will tell in the end if Ruben Dias can push on to become a world class player.

3. Victor Osimhen – $77 million

One of the more surprising moves of the window was Victor Osimhen to Napoli. The surprising part wasn’t the actual move but the price point. Osimhen has been touted as someone with the potential to be a superstar. With that in mind, Osimhen can easily end up justifying the price tag. But at the moment it seems like Napoli may have paid too much. So far this season, he has 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 appearances. At just 21 years of age, there’s clearly room to grow. Napoli must hope that he can realize his potential.

2. Arthur – $79.2 million

The other half of the Juve – Barca swap, Arthur comes in at number two on the most expensive transfers list. At 24 years of age, Arthur is about to hit his prime years. It seems at first glance that Juve made a shrewd move in swapping the aging Pjanic for Arthur. It should take some time for Arthur to adapt his game to the Serie A. When he does get comfortable he should be a star in the Juventus midfield for years to come.

1. Kai Havertz – $88 million

Kai Havertz moving from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea is officially the most expensive transfer. He may be worth every penny for Chelsea as they look to remake their team. At only 21 years of age, Havertz has tons of room to grow. He also has the potential to become a world class midfielder. The price tag may seem a bit much at the moment. But as Havertz continues to get playing time, his performances should improve. All of the attacking talent that was brought in by Chelsea this window could drastically change their performances in the near future.
