The Most Expensive Transfers – Summer 2020

One of the most exciting things about soccer is undoubtedly the transfer windows. Bringing in new talent is always fun. Today we’ll analyze some of the most expensive transfers from the Summer Transfer Window. All transfer information comes from Transfermarkt: https://www.transfermarkt.us/statistik/saisontransfers

5. Miralem Pjanic – $66 million

Miralem Pjanic moved from Juventus to Barcelona for a fee of approximately $66 million. When this move was first announced I admit I was very confused. Pjanic is a quality player but at the age of 30 it’s most likely that he will not be making another big money move in the future. For that reason, it seems like Barcelona may have overpaid for his services. This is even more likely when taking into account that he isn’t even a guaranteed starter. With Arthur moving in the opposite direction for only a few million more, this move was questionable at best for Barcelona.

4. Ruben Dias – $74.8 million

Ruben Dias slots in at number four on our list of most expensive transfers. The latest in a long line of expensive defenders for Manchester City, Dias cost $74.8 million. So far, the move seems to be worth it. Ruben Dias has been a steady force for City since he joined the team. His partnership with both Aymeric Laporte and John Stones could be positive for a City team that has struggled mightily in defense. Only time will tell in the end if Ruben Dias can push on to become a world class player.

3. Victor Osimhen – $77 million

One of the more surprising moves of the window was Victor Osimhen to Napoli. The surprising part wasn’t the actual move but the price point. Osimhen has been touted as someone with the potential to be a superstar. With that in mind, Osimhen can easily end up justifying the price tag. But at the moment it seems like Napoli may have paid too much. So far this season, he has 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 appearances. At just 21 years of age, there’s clearly room to grow. Napoli must hope that he can realize his potential.

2. Arthur – $79.2 million

The other half of the Juve – Barca swap, Arthur comes in at number two on the most expensive transfers list. At 24 years of age, Arthur is about to hit his prime years. It seems at first glance that Juve made a shrewd move in swapping the aging Pjanic for Arthur. It should take some time for Arthur to adapt his game to the Serie A. When he does get comfortable he should be a star in the Juventus midfield for years to come.

1. Kai Havertz – $88 million

Kai Havertz moving from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea is officially the most expensive transfer. He may be worth every penny for Chelsea as they look to remake their team. At only 21 years of age, Havertz has tons of room to grow. He also has the potential to become a world class midfielder. The price tag may seem a bit much at the moment. But as Havertz continues to get playing time, his performances should improve. All of the attacking talent that was brought in by Chelsea this window could drastically change their performances in the near future.

Top 10 Bundesliga Players

Here are the official Top 10 Bundesliga players according to Beer Belly Soccer:

10. Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies is already one of the best attacking fullbacks in the world at the age of 20. With tons of room to grow, Davies can continue his push towards the top of this list. He is also very important as Bayern Munich continue with their youth resurgence. Davies could become a mainstay in this Bayern team for a long time. He is definitely one of the top 10 Bundesliga players.

9. Christopher Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku is coming off of an amazing season for RB Leipzig. Although he’s not as well known, he’s definitely one of the top 10 Bundesliga players. Nkunku finished the season with 5 goals and 15 assists in the Bundesliga. The 22 year old is an up and coming star in the Bundesliga. He is also a vital member of the RB Leipzig team. If Leipzig wants to push on and attempt to win the Bundesliga title this season they will need Nkunku to continue his rise toward stardom.

8. David Alaba

David Alaba has long been considered one of the best players in the Bundesliga. He may not be there for much longer though. Alaba has been linked with a move away from Bayern as his contract gets closer to running out. But for at least this season, he will still be considered an important player for Bayern. Alaba is probably considered the best defender in the Bundesliga. He will be vital for Bayern as they push for another Bundesliga title.

7. Andrej Kramaric

Andrej Kramaric is probably one of the lesser known players in this list, but it is well deserved. Kramaric had a fantastic 2019/20 season. He finished the season with 12 goals and 4 assists in just 19 appearances. With more playing time, Kramaric can challenge Lewandowski for the golden boot. So far this year, Kramaric already has 6 goals. Hoffenheim need Kramaric to continue with his goal scoring prowess in order to find success this year.

6. Serge Gnabry

Serge Gnabry has improved every year since his arrival at Bayern Munich. He now looks like one of the top attackers in the Bundesliga. He looks to follow in the footsteps of Ribery and Robben as a winger for Bayern. Last season Gnabry was able to net 12 goals and 11 assists in the Bundesliga. He also has started this season in fine form with 4 goals and 1 assist in 6 matches.

5. Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich is really a do it all player for Bayern Munich. He can play all over the midfield and defense at a very high level. That versatility can be important over the course of the season as injuries and other problems occur. Kimmich is not one to put up gaudy stats, but he finished with 4 goals and 9 assists last year. That’s a very good return for someone who doesn’t spend a significant amount of time in attack.

4. Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland burst onto the scene last year. He has already made a huge impression even without playing a full Bundesliga season. Haaland scored 13 goals with 3 assists over the course of 15 games last season. To start this season he already has 6 goals in as many games. Haaland has shown that he’s a force to be reckoned with, and he will need to continue this impressive goal scoring form in order for Borussia Dortmund to compete.

3. Jadon Sancho

The other half of the Dortmund wonderkids finds himself in 3rd place on this list. Sancho has been extremely impressive since moving from Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund. He’s been so impressive in fact, that he’s starting to be linked with huge moves to Manchester United amongst a host of other teams. But for this season at least, Sancho will remain in the Bundesliga. This is huge for Dortmund, as Sancho was able to net 17 goals and 17 assists in the Bundesliga last season. If Sancho can replicate those numbers he could wind up moving further towards the top of this list.

2. Thomas Muller

One of the stalwarts in the Bundesliga over the last decade, Muller is still a top player. Even at the age of 31, he has shown no signs of slowing down. 8 goals and 21 assists last season show that Muller continues to be one of the best. The start of this season has shown no difference as Muller has 4 goals and 5 assists in 7 appearances. It may seem strange to have Muller listed at number 2 on this list, but he more than deserves it.

1. Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski is not only the best player in the Bundesliga right now; he’s also probably the best in the world. There is nobody else who can unseat Lewandowski from this top spot. As the top striker in the world, Lewandowski managed to score 34 goals last season. He may do even better this season. In amazing form, he already has 11 goals in 6 appearances. It is going to take a lot for anybody to take Lewandowski’s spot. It most likely won’t be happening this season either.
